According to the latest report from the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, autism prevalence among 8-year-old children in Utah remains steady at 2.7%—or roughly 1 in 37 children. That’s notably lower than the national average of 3.2% (1 in 31), offering a unique snapshot of how autism trends in Utah compare to other regions across the U.S.
This data, collected from 16 sites nationwide—including researchers at the University of Utah—highlights Utah’s progress in early identification and diagnostic access, especially for children in lower-income households. But it also underscores the ongoing need for inclusive, comprehensive autism services across all communities in the state.
Early Autism Identification Improving in Utah
One of the most encouraging findings in this year’s report is the significant drop in the number of young children waiting for an autism diagnosis. In 2020, about one-third of Utah’s 4-year-olds suspected of having autism had not received a formal evaluation. By 2022, that number dropped to just 10%.
This means more families are accessing critical diagnostic resources earlier—giving children a better chance of receiving support when it matters most. Early intervention remains one of the strongest predictors of long-term outcomes for children on the spectrum, and Utah appears to be moving in the right direction.
Demographic Shifts Reveal Ongoing Challenges
While the overall autism rate remains steady, the report notes differences in prevalence by race and neighborhood income. Black children in Utah were nearly twice as likely as white children to be diagnosed with autism, and children in lower-income areas had a higher prevalence than those in more affluent neighborhoods.
These insights suggest that access to services and early intervention is improving in some areas—but unevenly. Continued efforts are needed to ensure all children, regardless of background, are identified early and connected to meaningful care.
