First responders across Weber and Davis Counties are now better equipped to support individuals with autism, thanks to a recent initiative by the Autism Council of Utah. Sensory bags—filled with tools like noise-canceling headphones, fidget items, and communication boards—are being distributed to emergency departments, fire stations, and hospitals throughout the region.

The goal? To bridge the communication gap between neurodiverse individuals and first responders during high-stress encounters. With autism often misunderstood in emergency situations, these bags can make the difference between escalation and understanding.

Building Rapport Through Sensory Support

The sensory bags offer more than just tools—they offer connection. When someone on the autism spectrum struggles to process lights, sounds, or commands, a pair of noise-canceling headphones or a visual aid can instantly reduce stress and open lines of communication.

Simple gestures like offering a fidget toy or pointing to a picture card can help someone feel safe, heard, and more likely to respond calmly. First responders throughout Utah are already reporting better interactions with autistic individuals, showing just how powerful small accommodations can be.

A Statewide Push for Autism Inclusion

The Autism Council of Utah is committed to making this program truly statewide. From rural towns to urban centers, their volunteers are ensuring that no community is left out. And as more agencies receive sensory bags, demand continues to grow—proving that inclusion is not just appreciated, it’s needed.

Their work sends a clear message: people with autism deserve understanding, especially in moments of crisis. With the right tools and awareness, we can all contribute to a safer, more inclusive Utah.
