Each year in Provo, hundreds of autistic adults gather for something unlike any other event in the world: AutCon—short for Autism Convention. Designed by and for autistic individauals, this annual Utah-based gathering has grown into the largest neurodivergent-led convention of its kind, offering a safe, supportive, and celebratory space where autistic identities are not just accepted—they’re honored.

With colorful name tags indicating communication preferences and a program full of panels like “Networking for the Neurospicy,” AutCon is a powerful counter-narrative to outdated, deficit-based views of autism. It proves that autistic adults can—and do—thrive when given tools, space, and understanding.

Changing the Narrative: Strength, Not Stigma

The success of AutCon sends a message that’s long overdue: autism is not something to be cured, but something to be understood and supported. Attendees share career milestones, social strategies, and personal stories that challenge misconceptions—like those recently shared by public figures who paint autism in stigmatizing, inaccurate terms.

Instead of focusing on limitations, AutCon celebrates autistic strengths—blunt honesty, creative problem-solving, deep focus—and the diverse ways neurodivergent minds experience the world. The atmosphere is inclusive, empowering, and deeply personal. As one attendee said, “It’s like coming home to the homeland.”

Why Utah Is Leading the Way

It might surprise some that this groundbreaking convention takes place in Utah. But Utah’s autism community continues to push forward with innovation and compassion. From inclusive programming to statewide awareness efforts, the state is increasingly a hub for forward-thinking autism advocacy—and that includes high-quality ABA programs and services.

AutCon’s continued success only strengthens Utah’s position as a leader in autism inclusion and support. And with additional events expanding to Salt Lake City this fall, the message is clear: Utah is showing what’s possible when autistic voices lead the way.
